The story behind our very special collaboration
About Us
Patti and Melissa met in 2016 in London during a Marcher focus group on handbags. They stayed in touch, with Melissa continuously offering insights on new Marcher designs and product concepts.
Melissa is an artist and in 2021 founded her own brand, I AM BRICK. I AM BRICK features her design inspiration from British music legends, pop culture, and 80's nostalgia ... all showcased on the iconic London Brick.
The Idea
Melissa approached Patti about a collaboration in early 2023. Both were immediately inspired by the idea and quickly explored concepts and possibilities. After a few calls, they settled on the initial design inspiration and began their work.
Materials + Initial Testing
Once Melissa and Patti finalized the concept, they embarked on the most intensive phase of their collaboration, meticulously testing every product aspect.
The first order of business: determining the leather qualities and paint qualities.
Painting Techniques
To stitch over the paint or to paint the stitches? Paint over the logo or emboss after painting?
We had lots of questions about what would execute best, so we did a lot of trials to determine our aesthetic preference (yet ensure durability!)
Creating the Front Panels for Painting
Once the materials and painting techniques were nailed, it was time to make the front panels of the bags and get them to Melissa for painting.
After our testing, we learned that black leather and showcased the artwork the best, so all the front panels are black (even though not all of the bags we made are black).
Hand Painted in London
Then the finished front panels were off to London! Melissa meticulously painted the front pocket of each bag by hand.
Back in Portland for Finishing
Once the front panels were painted, varnished, and dried, they made their way back to Portland, where Patti embossed them, added the interior pockets and back panel, and finished them off!

This gorgeous bag is meticulously made and hand painted with specialized metallic paints. Only three of these beauties have been created to celebrate Pride month.
These bags feature special customizations that you won't find in any other Marcher bag, including a stunning emerald leather I AM BRICK branded interior pocket.Â
